The desktop foundry is a small, desktop-sized station which allows you to easily melt inexpensive field metals and cast them into a shape of your choice. The setup comes with placeholders for the materials you need to make your cast as well as crucible, heat source and cast holder.
The desktop foundry is great for making jewelry, crafts, and even hardware that can be used for bigger projects. Although, field metals are typically fairly weak compared to other metals. You should always use lead-free metal when working with components that may be exposed to humans or food sources.
This project is a spin-off of Bob Knetzger’s desktop foundry as featured in Makezine.
